Description : Title: Experimental Measurement and Modeling of the Thermodynamic Properties of Electrolyte Solutions with chemical equilibrium. Keywords: thermodynamics, statistical physics, molecular simulation, energy and process engineering.

Location: ENSTA, Chemical Engineering Dept., 32 Boulevard Victor, 75015 Paris, France. Supervisors: Walter Fürst and Patrice Paricaud. Electrolyte solutions are encountered in many industrial applications, and the determination of their thermodynamic properties is often crucial to the design and optimization of chemical processes Because of strong deviations from ideality in these solutions, the prediction of thermodynamic propréiétés of these systems remains a challenge. The modeling of these systems implies using molecular based models and the laws of statistical thermodynamics. The thermodynamic models are usually extensions of models for nonelectrolyte mixtures obtained by adding a specific term to take into account the electrostatic interactions between ions. However, these models are accurate only if they also take into account the interactions between ions and molecular species, i.e. the phenomena of solvation of ions by solvent molecules.

The aim of the thesis is twofold. First, it consists of the development of a new model incorporating a term for the original representation of solvation. The development of this new model can be made with the help of data generated by molecular simulation. As in the case of an equation of state electrolyte previously developed in our laboratory, the model should have predictive features. Secondly, we will apply the thermodynamic model to systems with a strong industrial interest and exhibiting chemical equilibria (sulfur-iodine cycle for hydrogen production, solvent mixtures, metal complexes, absorption of acid gases, …). This part of the work will use data from the literature and new speciation measurements. These new measurements will provide the experimental aspect of the thesis. This thesis wil allow students to deepen their knowledge in many scientific areas: thermodynamics, statistical physics, condensed matter, numerical methods and experimental measurements. Candidates should have strong skills in mathematics, numerical methods, statistical physics and thermodynamics, allowing them to be autonome. Experience in programming and modeling of phase equilibria will be particularly appreciated. Contacts: Send your CV, a covering letter and if possible reference letters to Patrice Paricaud (patrice.paricaud @ ensta.fr), and Walter Fürst (walter.furst @ ensta.fr)

Hecse admits new students roughly once a year depending on available funding.

Application:
Applicants can submit both pre-applications and full applications.

A pre-application is submitted, if the applicant does not yet have a supervisor within Hecse.
Applicants who have been accepted by a supervisor in the pre-application phase or students that already have a supervisor within Hecse can submit a full application.
Both applications are submitted electronically.

Curriculum vitae:
A curriculum should be at most three pages long and include among others the applicant’s personal information (name, contact information, age), education (institutions, degrees, grade average) and work experience.

Diplomas:
Electronic copies (scanned pdf) of relevant diplomas should be included both in the pre-application and the full application. Relevant diplomas are, e.g., diplomas for MSc and BSc degrees.

Applicants that are accepted for Hecse positions must submit officially confirmed (paper) copies of relevant diplomas when registering for PhD studies at the universities.

Diplomas must be in Finnish, Swedish or English. If not, they must be translated and the translations must be officially confirmed.

Applicants who have already been accepted as post-graduate students by the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology can use the normal Finnish style of confirming copies. There is no need for official confirmation of the diplomas.
Duration of Hecse funding:
The funded doctoral student positions will start on 1 January, 2010 at the earliest. Funding is provided until the projected completion of the PhD studies, maximally for 48 months

Applicants should state for how long a period they would prefer funding and when the funding period would start. In normal cases, the period would start on 1 January 2010 (the earliest), but in some cases the funding period may start later (e.g., if the applicant already has some other funding/work commitment for the spring of 2010, the period could start on 1 August 2010).

Hecse expects students to finish their PhD degrees in 4 years and will take this into account when providing funding. If the applicant is not a fresh MSc graduate, he or she should describe the current status of his or her PhD studies and research. The applicant must state the estimated date of the PhD defense, and in such cases the date is expected to be roughly four years from the start of the PhD studies (not from the enrollment to Hecse). Admission to Hecse is based both on studies and research so far, as well as on the plan to complete them.

Eligibility:
The applicant is expected to have a Master or Licentiate degree, as well as an interest in scientific research and the work of a researcher. The applicants, if accepted, are expected to engage themselves in full-time research and study for a maximum of four years. They are also expected to participate in the events organized by the graduate school. The progress of the research has to be reported periodically to the school.

Research and study plan:
Full applications must include a detailed research and study plan for the whole period of PhD studies from start to finish. The plan should include at least the following sections (4-5 pages)
1. State of the art of the research sub-field
2. Planned research including methods
3. Expected research results and time schedule including expected dissertation date
4. Concrete goals for the first two years of study
5. Financing plan. The financing plan must indicate how the applicant is going to finance his or her full-time post-graduate studies. The plan should be as precise as possible. If the applicant are applying only for funding from Hecse this should be indicated in the financing plan.
6. References

Also pre-applications may include a research and study plan.

Salary:
The salary for a doctoral student is based on levels 1 – 4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel of the university salary system. With the salary component based on personal work performance the overall salary range is 1 608 – 3 209 euros per month.

Selection:
Admission to Hecse is based on the quality of the research and study plan, previous studies and research (if applicable), financing plan, recommendation from a supervisor in Hecse, and other possible indicators.

If you are among the top students in your field, and you are interested in acquiring research skills at a very high level, the three-year PhD programme at CBS may be for to you. The programme allows you to conduct research within a topic of your own choice under the supervision of CBS professors, and supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD programme, http://uk.cbs.dk/phd .

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. Two thirds of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions.

CBS now invites applications for PhD scholarships. The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement.

The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 23,370 (app. 3,100 euro) up to DKK 28,477 (app. 3,800 euro) depending on seniority, a monthly non- pensionable allowance (app. 165 euro) plus a pension contribution equivalent to 17,1 per cent on 85 per cent of the base salary.

Your application should include a research proposal that addresses a topic within the CBS research profile. CBS covers all of the classic fields within business economics and business languages connected with the management and operation of public and private organizations – for example, marketing, finance, accounting, organization and translation. In addition, research is carried out in a number of subjects important for the understanding of the challenges firms face in the global knowledge society. These include not only business law, informatics, innovation, international economics, inter-cultural understanding, communication and media research, but also business oriented research in such fields as philosophy, political science, design, anthropology, and history. Please consult the CBS homepage (http://uk.cbs.dk/forskning_viden) for further information about the research topics of CBS.

Managing Complex Cloud Systems

Cloud computing is a novel paradigm where services and resources availability scales dynamically on demand. Due to reduced maintenance costs, more and more software solutions are provided as services within cloud systems, and first adoption of cloud concepts is proving successful, e.g., Google App Engine or Amazon S3. Still, there is a lot of space for improvement. For example, consider complex software systems, with sophisticated user interfaces, possibly built on top of legacy systems. And one notices that cloud computing does not provide necessary support. This is even more evident if we consider applications within highly dynamic environments with changing requirements on-the-fly, unpredictable failures, with limited or no control over execution. This is especially important in the domains where maintaining single version of the software system satisfying all potential customers is either unfeasible or cost-ineffective. One of the possible solutions is to apply intentional aspects to the development and deployment of services in the cloud. Intentions represent goals and expectations of different parties involved in the cloud: software providers, customers, cloud infrastructure vendors, etc. Intentions are inherently declarative, leaving a complete freedom for the execution environment to decide how to execute the program, and how to achieve (or not to violate) given declarative definitions. Having intentions attached to individual services (in form of service level agreements), to software systems, to cloud infrastructure would result in better cloud solutions, giving more control to individual participants yet maintaining traditional cloud computing benefits. We offer a PhD position in the area of service oriented architecture considering one or more of the following topics: Cloud computing infrastructure, Software as a service scenarios, Automatic composition of services, Domain-specific languages for cloud systems.

Required profile: – You should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline. – You are expected to have an excellent academic record (list of examination marks from your university degree) and be curious, creative and ambitious. – You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in English. – Ability and desire to design, implement and manage information systems is a strong plus. – Knowledge in Distributed systems and Web services is considered a plus
