If you are among the top students in your field, and you are interested in acquiring research skills at a very high level, the three-year PhD programme at CBS may be for to you. The programme allows you to conduct research within a topic of your own choice under the supervision of CBS professors, and supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD programme, http://uk.cbs.dk/phd .

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. Two thirds of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions.

CBS now invites applications for PhD scholarships. The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement.

The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 23,370 (app. 3,100 euro) up to DKK 28,477 (app. 3,800 euro) depending on seniority, a monthly non- pensionable allowance (app. 165 euro) plus a pension contribution equivalent to 17,1 per cent on 85 per cent of the base salary.

Your application should include a research proposal that addresses a topic within the CBS research profile. CBS covers all of the classic fields within business economics and business languages connected with the management and operation of public and private organizations – for example, marketing, finance, accounting, organization and translation. In addition, research is carried out in a number of subjects important for the understanding of the challenges firms face in the global knowledge society. These include not only business law, informatics, innovation, international economics, inter-cultural understanding, communication and media research, but also business oriented research in such fields as philosophy, political science, design, anthropology, and history. Please consult the CBS homepage (http://uk.cbs.dk/forskning_viden) for further information about the research topics of CBS.

Closing date: Friday 2 October 2009 at 12.00 noon

Further information can be obtained from the CBS Office of PhD Education, e-mail phdadmission@cbs.dk. Potential applicants are encouraged to identify a preferred department for their PhD studies and contact this department well in advance the closing date in order to develop a research proposal. (Please note that Dan- ish holidays are generally taken in July).

Managing Complex Cloud Systems

Cloud computing is a novel paradigm where services and resources availability scales dynamically on demand. Due to reduced maintenance costs, more and more software solutions are provided as services within cloud systems, and first adoption of cloud concepts is proving successful, e.g., Google App Engine or Amazon S3. Still, there is a lot of space for improvement. For example, consider complex software systems, with sophisticated user interfaces, possibly built on top of legacy systems. And one notices that cloud computing does not provide necessary support. This is even more evident if we consider applications within highly dynamic environments with changing requirements on-the-fly, unpredictable failures, with limited or no control over execution. This is especially important in the domains where maintaining single version of the software system satisfying all potential customers is either unfeasible or cost-ineffective. One of the possible solutions is to apply intentional aspects to the development and deployment of services in the cloud. Intentions represent goals and expectations of different parties involved in the cloud: software providers, customers, cloud infrastructure vendors, etc. Intentions are inherently declarative, leaving a complete freedom for the execution environment to decide how to execute the program, and how to achieve (or not to violate) given declarative definitions. Having intentions attached to individual services (in form of service level agreements), to software systems, to cloud infrastructure would result in better cloud solutions, giving more control to individual participants yet maintaining traditional cloud computing benefits. We offer a PhD position in the area of service oriented architecture considering one or more of the following topics: Cloud computing infrastructure, Software as a service scenarios, Automatic composition of services, Domain-specific languages for cloud systems.

Required profile: – You should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline. – You are expected to have an excellent academic record (list of examination marks from your university degree) and be curious, creative and ambitious. – You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in English. – Ability and desire to design, implement and manage information systems is a strong plus. – Knowledge in Distributed systems and Web services is considered a plus

Ph.D. Position in Computer Science at the University of Bourgogne (France)

Description : The Institute for Spatial Information and Measurement (I3mainz) at the University of Applied Sciences (Mainz, Germany) and its partner the Laboratory of Computer Science, Electronics and Imaging (Le2i – UMR 5158 CNRS) at the University of Bourgogne (Auxerre, France) are seeking applications from qualified individuals to fill an available Ph.D. position in the field of Computer Science commencing September, 2009. The successful candidate will be expected to hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field and will be enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Bourgogne. The candidate’s work will be carried out in part at I3mainz in Germany and in part at the Le2i in France. His research will be within I3mainz’s WiDOP project which benefits from a three-year funding support (~ 27 000 EUR per year for this position) granted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany). WiDOP (Wissensbasierte Detektion von Objekten in Punktwolken für Anwendungen im Ingenieurbereich), which stands for “Knowledge-based detection of objects in 3D point clouds for engineering applications”, is an ambitious project aiming to devise and develop efficient intelligent methods capable of achieving an automated processing of terrestrial laser scanner data. This project contrasts with existing ones in that it uses prior knowledge as basis for a selective, object-oriented detection, identification and modeling of objects present in the point cloud. This knowledge can be obtained from various sources such as databases, construction plans, as-built plans or Geographic Information Systems. Within WiDOP, the successful candidate will work on knowledge-based numerical processing of 3D point clouds. The goal is to develop and implement intelligent methods capable of achieving an automated processing, detection, identification and modeling of objects from terrestrial laser scanner data. Applicants should send, by e-mail, their curriculum vitae, the names and contact information of 2 references and a cover letter to Adlane Habed Adlane.Habed@u-bourgogne.fr Tel.: +33 (0)3 86 49 28 57 Links: [i3mainz] http://www.i3mainz.fh-mainz.de/ [Le2i] http://vision.u-bourgogne.fr/le2i/
